Introduced with EVSCP regulations in 2021, Random Start is a randomised delay applied to sessions start times.
Maintaining grid stability is a key government objective. The concern is when grid demand spikes, for example, after a power outage or in response to time-of-use tariffs, demand could overload the grid.
To prevent this, the 2021 Regulations mandate a native randomised delay function. This introduces a random offset in starting times, for a gradual increase in electricity demand that the grid can manage more effectively.
The randomised delay must range from 0 to 600 seconds, and vary in duration for each charging instance.
According to the regulations, charge points must be configured to allow the end-user to bypass the randomised delay in situations where it is not desirable. To access the randomised delay setting please navigate to Settings, Charger Settings and select Random Start.
When Random Start is enabled, your vehicle won’t begin charging immediately upon plugging in. Instead, you’ll see a countdown ranging from 0 to 600 seconds. Charging will commence once the countdown reaches zero.
